This coming round is named in honour of Sir Douglas Nicholls and is timed to coincide with NAIDOC week.

Sir Douglas Nicholls was the first Aboriginal footballer to represent Victoria, and played at Northcote before and after his time playing for Fitzroy in the VFL. He was a Churches of Christ pastor and combined his ministry with welfare work and advocacy for the rights of Indigenous Australians. He was awarded a knighthood for his work on behalf of Aboriginal people. Fitzroy Stars home ground is named in his honour.

NAIDOC Week, held in July each year, celebrates the history, culture and achievements of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme this year is ‘Because of her, we can’ in recognition of the contribution that women have played – and continue to play – as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels.

We are proud to have many such young women represented in our girls teams.
